Summary:This study aims to determine if primary school education preservice teachers’ views on popular music in the subject of “ Music types and styles in the world and in Turkey” according to the age and course taking status variables. The sample of the study is 261 undergraduate students at the department of primary school teaching at Atatürk University. The study used a descriptive survey research method. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire of students’ views about popular music at primary school education department. The findings show that the views of the students display significant differences in terms of gender and course taking status variables. According to the mean and standard deviation values on the views of students about populer music, it was found that popular music constantly changes and so it is temporal; technology is an important factor influential in the emergence and development of popular music; popular music has positive and negative effects on people. The results show that female students scored significantly more importance on the fact that popular music is universal music type and a communication tool than male students. For the eight items among the left eleven ones, the mean values of females are higher than the mean values of males.
