Résumé: | This paper explores the economic, political and social situation in the Yucatan peninsula using the consular correspondence of the French legation maintained by the various consuls who occupied the post between 1832 and 1850 in Campeche port, localized in the Mexico Gulf: Renon, d´Hauterive, Faramond and Laisné de Villevêque. The information presented into their letters to the successive plenipotentiaries’ ministers of France in Mexico. On one hand, this paper highlights the first impressions they emit and have a common and constant denominator: corruption and smuggling; on the other hand, the monopole of logwood exploitation divides an oligarchic merchant class and finally a peninsula always get into a fight where enemies depend on interest of their leaders. |
