The study used a phenomenological research design. The sample consisted of thirteen academics working in Mersin University and selected through purposive sampling. The study employed two measuring instruments. The first is the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MIB). The second is a seven question demographic survey. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview form and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Findings of the study consist of 3 main and 13 subthemes. Main themes are; problems related to management, problems related to work and the problems related to students. Subthemes of the main theme of problems related to management are; oppression from executives, injustice, organisational problems, preventing the participation, deprivation of rights of title, physical inadequacies and unsupported scientific activities. Subthemes of main theme of problems related to work are; excessive workload and administrative duties. Finally, subthemes of main theme of problems related to students are; academic inadequacy, excessive number of students, addiction and abuse. The analysis results showed that academics who have problems with administrative duties and excessive workload experience emotional exhaustion and those who have administrative problems and those who observe low academic performance in students experience all dimensions of burnout. It is recommended that studies on burnout in future must be designed on the basis of qualitative research and it is expected to be useful for industrial and academic community.Ufuk ORHANGamze MAVİ DOĞRUFırat Universityarticleburnoutqualitative content analysisphenomenologyacademicianstate universitySocial SciencesHSocial sciences (General)H1-99DEENFRTRJournal of Academic Social Science Studies , Vol 11, Iss 71, Pp 427-441 (2019)
