Description
Summary:Can we not stylize? The article discusses the problem of colloquializing and archaizing of literary style in translation. The author agrees with Antoine Berman that such stylistic measures are difficult and result in many failed translation attempts but he considers stylization necessary and possible. His point of departure is Odile Schneider‑Mizony’s concept of “fictitious colloquiality” (oralité fictive) which leads to the creation of “spoken archi‑language”; in his opinion, the model of such translation in Poland is provided by the works of Zofia Chądzyńska. The author argues that this way of translating can be applied to other types of style, including archaizing, as proved by the successful translations done by Tadeusz Boy‑Żeleński and Andrzej Nowak.
